Klaipeda Stevedoring Company (KLASCO) is a high-tech level company and the largest stevedoring company in the port of Klaipeda and the Baltic countries as compared in cargo turnover.
The Company leases two separate areas of the port, and operates at more than 20 berths. In the Northern part of port where the deepest basin is, all activities are carried out in specialized terminals. Quays are equipped with communication engineering, fire-fighting equipment, and railway tracks. In the southern part of port, in the Smeltė peninsula, there is a Ferry (Ro-Ro) Terminal, plus, there is territory available for further development. Ferry lines connect Klaipėda with the ports of Kiel in Germany, Karlshamn in Sweden and Copenhagen, and Fredericia in Denmark. Both areas are equipped with wagon distribution stations and truck parking. Vessels are supplied with electricity and fresh water. There is a dining-room and medical station. Customs services are also provided at the seaport control stations in Vite and Malku Bay.
KLASCO, as a successor of the old Trade Port traditions, has reached a limit of 13 million tons in cargo handled in recent years, and has reached the highest performance level in the company’s history. The company holds more than one-third of the port services market share and regarding its investment program, the company retains its leading position.
Its exclusive role in cargo nomenclature focuses on grain and bulk fertilizers. After dredging of the channel and berths, KLASCO is the only stevedoring company which has the ability to accept not only Panamax vessel of all types, but also Post-Panamax type vessels with 13.8 meters draft.
A significant portion of cargo turnover takes place at the Ferry (Ro-Ro) Terminal with Ro-Ro cargo and traditional - general and dry bulk cargoes. The "Klasco Towage Assistance" branch provides services that are rendered by three of the the most powerful tugboats in the port of Klaipėda.
KLASCO constantly improves its activities according to the market’s needs. During the period of 2013-2014, the company’s investment should be more than 60 million LTL. At the moment, KLASCO is constructing a warehouse for bulk cargo, in process with a long-term modernization program of gantry cranes, and renewing cargo handling equipment. In adapting to the changing conditions of competition, a great amount of funds are used for restructuring activities in accordance with the ISO and ISPS (port security) international standards and code requirements.
KLASCO’s production efficiency, social and environmental responsibility and consistent investment policy has a significant impact on the port economy and the entire country's transport infrastructure.
